Durban vascular surgeon, Dr Vinesh Padayachy from the eThekwini Hospital and Heart Centre has raised the alarm over the increased number of patients suffering from kidney disease in the country.
National Kidney Week was recently held under the global theme “Kidney Health for All” and renal dialysis is once again under the spotlight.
Padayachy says that an estimated five million people have kidney disease and around 10,000 people die from the disease each year.
He says there are no symptoms in the early stages of kidney disease, citing the importance of regular checkups and maintaining a careful diet.
