Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has condemned violence in Durban following anti-immigration protests.
Police say violence erupted after a group marching against Gender-Based Violence joined protesters coming from Home Affairs.
An alleged assault that reportedly left one marcher with a broken leg sparked anger, leading to vehicles being set alight.
Meanwhile, Home Affairs has withdrawn a controversial directive on asylum seeker applications after reception offices were overwhelmed.
Cachalia has urged the public to remain calm and act within the law.
Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli says the province cannot afford a repeat of the July 2021 unrest.
Ntuli was speaking alongside Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and provincial police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, following violent anti-immigration protests in Durban.
Police say 14 vehicles were torched and several buildings set alight.
No arrests have been made in connection with the property destruction, while three foreign nationals have been arrested for allegedly assaulting a protester.
Ntuli warns that the violence threatens stability in the province and could undermine investor confidence.
