President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially signed the National Health Insurance Bill into law, which he says will transform South Africa’s healthcare system and ensure universal coverage for health services.

Ramaphosa says in signing the NHI Bill, they are signalling determination to advance the constitutional right to access health care as articulated in Section 27 of the Constitution.

He says access to health care will be determined by need and not ability to pay, and will ensure better outcomes and avoid unnecessary death.
