The Constitutional Court has ruled that former president, Jacob Zuma,  is not eligible to be a member of the National Assembly and stand for elections.

Judge Leona Theron reads that the judgement is fully based on Section 47 1(e) of the constitution.

This section states that a person who has been sentenced to 12 months or more in prison cannot stand for elections till 5 years has lapsed of the sentencing.

The Independent Electoral Comission (IEC) had approached the apex court to explain Section 47 1(e) following the Electoral Court ruling against them which permitted Zuma to run for elections despite their argument based on the section.

Here’s Judge Theron handing down judgement.
