KwaMakhutha police say they have opened an inquest docket after the decomposed body of a 72-year-old woman was discovered at her place of residence in Illovu, south of Durban, yesterday.

It is alleged that neighbours raised the alarm after noticing a strong smell coming from the house and realising that they had not seen the woman for several weeks.

Police say the elderly woman’s grandson was allegedly found inside the house, eating near the decomposed body.

The circumstances surrounding the woman’s death are not yet known.

Police spokesperson Paul Magwaza says officers are investigating the circumstances that led to the discovery and are awaiting further information from the post-mortem examination.

Police are appealing to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.

“Circumstances that led to her death are investigated, at this stage no person has been arrested or taken in for questioning,” said Magwaza.
