Executive Director for Technical Services at the eThekwini Municipality, Ednick Msweli, has dismissed reports that the city is failing to address its water challenges and deteriorating infrastructure.
This comes as several areas across eThekwini continue to experience water cuts, while the city says it has reduced its non-revenue water losses from 13-thousand to 3-thousand-900.
The city recently faced a major crisis involving contracted plumbers, which severely affected water service delivery and contributed to backlogs in addressing water leaks.
Msweli says the municipality is working to improve water infrastructure and address service delivery challenges.
He says the city’s predominantly rural areas, coupled with damage caused by previous natural disasters, have affected its plans to prioritise water provision.
Msweli says these challenges have placed additional pressure on the municipality’s water network and infrastructure. He says the municipality is also working to improve the maintenance of ageing infrastructure and respond to leaks more efficiently.
Msweli says reducing water losses remains a key priority as the municipality works to ensure a more reliable water supply to communities across eThekwini.
