The Proteas received a heroes welcome back home when they landed at the OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday after their historic ICC World Test Championship triumph at Lords, and captain Temba Bavuma hopes this win will create a culture of winning trophies at the Proteas. South Africa overcame the challenge of long-time rivals Australia, the number 1 ranked test side in the world, to win the World test championship title for the first time courtesy of a 5-wickets victory at the home of Cricket.

The victory ended a 27-year long wait for an ICC trophy for South African Cricket, and etched the current generation of players into the history books. Bavuma carried the famous Mace alongside head coach Shukri Conrad as they were greeted by cheering crowds on Wednesday morning.

Speaking at the arrival Press conference at the Cricket South Africa headquarters in Johhanesburg, Bavuma, who shared a match-winning 147-run partnership with Aiden Markram in the final, says he is hopeful that this win will create a culture of winning trophies in the Proteas camp.

“I think from a team perspective in terms of the legacy we’d like to leave behind, we would like to the start of a team that encourages and inspires other teams to start winning trophies,” said Bavuma,

“It’s something that the guys who have been wearing the Proteas badge for a while that we speak about, it’s what connects us so we hope that this can be the start of a lot more of these trophies. I think we know as a team as well, as much as we have achieved what we have achieved in the 18-24 months it is not a big legacy as of yet. We will speak again in two to three years time. I think that is probably the biggest thing, we want to start a culture of winning trophies for the country.”
