Australia reclaimed the Netball World Cup after defeating England 61-45 in the Final of the tournament of the Netball World Cup 2023 in Cape Town.
Four goals up at half-time, the world No 1-ranked side proceeded to trample their opponents into submission, routinely breaking down any semblance of England attacking threat to triumph by a huge 16-goal margin.
England had beaten Australia 56-55 in the group stages and they had been six goals down at half-time only to triumph by one to claim their first ever World Cup victory over Australia. Not this time. Victory for Australia sees them claim gold a year on from victory in the Commonwealth Games while England must settle for silver which equals the nation’s best result at the tournament.
Earlier in the evening in the Bronze Medal Match, Jamaica defeated New Zealand for the second time in a matter off days to secure their first podium place since 2007. Jamaica have played in six World Cup bronze medal matches since 1991 and won three of them but all of those victories have come against England. This time they were up against a Silver Ferns side still reeling from a draw against hosts South Africa and then a semi-final defeat at the hands of England.
