The Blitzboks will kick-start Team South Africa’s bid for Olympic glory on Wednesday as they are set to kick off the Men’s Sevens Rugby tournament at the Paris Olympic games. South Africa will face Ireland in the tournament opener at Stade de France at 17:30 (SAST), and then take on New Zealand at 21:30 in the evening, in what promises to be a tough Pool A.
The Blitzboks will run out for a third consecutive time at the Olympics, looking to redeem themselves after getting a dissapointing 5th-placed finish at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. A bronze medal in Rio 2016 is South Africa’s best showing in Men’s sevens Rugby at the Olympics. Coach Philip Snyaman and his boys have had a tough season in the sevens circuit, needing the Olympics repechage tournament to qualify for Paris after failing to make the cut during the regular season.
South Africa is in Pool A alongside arch-rivals New Zealand, Ireland and Japan.
