The Ethekwini Municipality has released an official statement in response to the aggrieved flood victims who were evicted from a building on 287 Mahatma Ghandi Road in Durban.

The municipality says it had several engagements with the families who were displaced by floods about looming evictions following a series of meetings to talk about available accommodation options. However, the municipality’s efforts did not bare fruit.

However the families told Gagasi FM News that they were not given enough time prepare for eviction. 

The municipality confirmed that, “A comprehensive occupancy review and beneficiary verification process was undertaken to determine eligibility for permanent housing assistant.”

According to the statement issued by the municipality, the outcome of the assessment confirmed that the affected households do not meet the eligibility requirements for the available government housing intervention programs.
