Parliament’s Section 89 Impeachment Committee has voted to oppose two applications before the Western Cape High Court challenging its decision to revoke the nomination of Advocate Griffiths Madonsela SC as Chief Evidence Leader.

The motion was passed by 19 votes to 9. The committee met today to deliberate on candidates for the position. However the process has now been paused after the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) raised the issue of the pending court challenge.

The EFF’s block of the process to nominate and appoint a new evidence leader till the matter is heard in court the least has been successful.

This afternoon, EFF MP, Omphile Maotwe told members that while there is no interdict preventing it from proceeding, the committee should not continue with the process while the matter is before court.

This then led to the process being paused till the court makes a decision. EFF and the African People’s Liberation Supporters say they want the court to set aside the committee’s decision to withdraw Madonsela’s nomination last week.

Committee chairperson Makashule Gana says progress has nevertheless been made on the committee’s terms of reference.

The EFF and ALPS matter is expected to be heard in the Western Cape High Court.
