Jose Riveiro’s farewell match as Orlando Pirates coach will take place on Tuesday evening when the Bucaneers host Lamontville Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium in a Betway Premiership clash. The Spanish mentor will end his three-year stint at the Soweto giants after requesting an early release from his contract, which was set to expire at the end of June.
“Jose approached us a few weeks ago with a request to be released from his contract ahead of schedule, having signed with a new club”, said Orlando Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza in a club statement.
Riveiro, who is rumoured to be joining Egyptian giants Al Ahly, leaves South Africa with five trophies to his name having won 3 MTN 8 titles and two Nedbank Cup trophies during his time with the Sea Robbers. His only cup final loss came at the hands of their Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs who beat them 2-1 at the Moses Mabhida stadium last weekend.
The Bucaneers are still mathematically in the Betway Premiership title race as they currently trail log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by 15 log points with five games to go. However, Riveiro’s men would need to win all their remaining matches with Sundowns losing their last two, and also make ground on Sundowns’ significant goal difference, to have a chance of winning the league.
Venue: Orlando Stadium
