Acting National Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane has directed the police in KwaZulu-Natal to activate a 72-hour tracking operation to track and apprehend suspects after eleven people were shot and killed at KwaMakhutha, south of Durban.
On Monday evening, a mass shooting incident unfolded in KwaMakhutha where 14 people were gunned down resulting in 11 fatalities including a pregnant woman.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in KZN have opened investigations on this matter as the attackers fled the scene unidentified.
Acting National Police Commissioner, Dimpane passed an order to the KZN police to activate a 72-hour tracking operation following the tragic incident.
Spokesperson Nonkululeko Phokane says Dimpane has expressed deep concern and says investigators are following a promising lead.
“The SAPS is appealing to community members to provide investigators with reliable and credible information that can assist in identifying, tracing and apprehending the suspects,” said Phokane.

Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Thami Ntuli visited the scene on Wednesday morning where he engaged with community members and addressed the media.
Ntuli expressed concern with the level of gun violence in the area and urged that the matter be dealt with in its deserving sensitiviy.
The Premier further revealed that during his engagement with community members, he was told that drug related disputes could be central to the mass shooting.
“Really, it’s disturbing. We understand that it is a controversial incident because there are a number reports. I have engaged members of the community as to what is really happening in the area and they are citing the problem of drugs,” said the Premier.
