Netflix has finally premiered its first original African animation series titled “Supa Team 4.” The show, created by Zambian writer Malenga Mulendema, is part of the streaming giant’s Representation Matters Collection.

Supa Team 4 is set in the neo-futurastic city of Lusaka, Zambia, where four teenage girls become undercover superheroes after joining a retired secret agent on a quest to save the world from a looming threat.

Zee, Temwe, Monde, and Komana, are chosen by Mama K to become a team of undercover superheroes after they save people when Storm Drain, a supervillain who can control the weather, which includes making and controlling tornadoes, wreaks havoc on their school’s science fair. These four girls are given super suits that enhance their natural speed and strength, as they go up against villains like Storm Drain, Locust Pocus, Snap Back, and others, who all work for Bad Magz, an evil mastermind who is bent on brining the city to its knees.

Originally known as “Mama Ks Team 4,” the series is set in Zambia’s capital, Lusaka, and features four undercover teen superheroes recruited by a former spy. These young heroes use their powers to fight crime while navigating the challenges of everyday life and school.

Malenga expressed her commitment to bringing African representation to the global market, stating, “In creating a superhero show set in Lusaka, I hope to introduce the world to four strong African girls who save the day in their own fun and crazy way. Most importantly, I want to illustrate that anyone from anywhere can be a superhero,” according to CBS News.

The idea for the series originated when Malenga pitched it in a pan-African talent search by Triggerfish Animation Studios, which she won in 2015. Netflix picked up the series in 2019. Earlier this year, Netflix expanded its operations on the continent, following the success of other African-produced shows like “Blood and Water.”

The series was created by Malenga Mulendema and features Pamela Nomvete, Kimani Arthur, Nancy Sekhokoane, and Zowa Ngira.
