The uMkhonto weSizwe Party is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to reinstate the suspended National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola.
This follows the withdrawal of all charges against him earlier this week after he was arrested in connection with the Medicare 24 tender fraud case.
Masemola was facing charges of contravening the Public Finance Management Act, relating to the awarding of a tender to a company owned by businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who is accused of corruption.
On the 23rd of April, President Ramaphosa placed Masemola on precautionary suspension and appointed Puleng Dimpane as acting national commissioner.
To date, Dimpane is operating as the acting SAPS commissioner, and has since overseen multiple developments including the recent arrest of suspended Deputy Police Commissioner, Shadrack Sibiya.
On Tuesday, the Pretoria Magistrates Court formally withdrew Masemola’s charges after NPA head Andy Mothibi ordered the charges against Masemola withdrawn following a review of the case.
The MK Party says there is currently no law preventing Ramaphosa from making a decision to reinstate Masemola, particularly since he no longer faces any charges.
MK Party spokesperson Sifiso Mahlangu reiterated that Ramaphosa should terminate Masemola’s suspension.
“The criminal proceedings against General Masemola have collapsed, all charges have been formally withdrawn and no lawful or rational basis remains for keeping him outside his office,” Mahlangu said.
