Sinenjabulo Zungu

Thespotlight shines brightly on Sinenjabulo Zungu, a dynamic leader whose influence continues to shape both the sporting landscape and the empowerment of women across South Africa.

Born and raised in Umlazi, Zungu has always carried a deep passion for sport and a profound commitment to uplifting women. While many recognize her presence within football circles, her impact extends far beyond the pitch. As the Chief Executive Officer of AmaZulu FC, she has emerged as a trailblazer in a space that has long been perceived as male-dominated, demonstrating that leadership, vision, and resilience know no gender.
Under her stewardship, AmaZulu FC has not only grown as a football institution but has also become a platform for meaningful conversations around inclusion, representation, and opportunity for women in sport. Zungu has consistently used her voice and influence to bring women together—creating spaces where they are encouraged to challenge limitations, pursue leadership, and step boldly into positions of influence.

Sinenjabulo Zungu

Often described as a “woman in sport,” Zungu’s purpose transcends titles. She is an activist for women’s empowerment and a firm believer in the potential of women to redefine industries and societal expectations.

In a world that still grapples with the legacy of male-dominated leadership, she stands as a powerful reminder that women are not just participants but pioneers.
Her latest milestone further cements her legacy.

Zungu has spearheaded the establishment of the Sinenjabulo Zungu Sports Hub at St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls in Kloof, KwaZulu-Natal—an initiative designed to nurture young female athletes and cultivate confidence, discipline, and excellence through sport.

The sports centre represents more than infrastructure; it is a symbol of opportunity and a testament to her commitment to investing in the next generation of women leaders.
As she prepares to travel to Zimbabwe, Zungu continues to inspire audiences beyond South Africa’s borders. In a recent conversation, she reflected on the balance between her professional responsibilities and personal life while remaining dedicated to empowering women globally.

As the CEO of AmaZulu FC, you operate in an industry that has historically been male dominated. What challenges have you faced as a woman in this space, and how have those experiences shaped the leader you are today?

Operating in a historically male-dominated industry has presented challenges such as gender bias and stereotypes. However, these experiences have strengthened my leadership approach by encouraging strong relationship-building, strategic communication, and diplomacy. They have also shaped my belief in collaborative leadership, where success is achieved through teamwork and mutual respect rather than hierarchy.

Beyond football administration, you’ve become a strong voice for women empowerment. Why do you believe sport is such a powerful platform for empowering women and young girls?

Sport is a powerful platform for empowering women and young girls because it teaches them to trust their abilities. Through training, competition, and personal improvement, young women begin to recognise their potential and what they can achieve. Sport builds confidence in both physical and mental strength, encourages the courage to take risks and challenge themselves, and instills a belief that they can lead and succeed in competitive environments.

Your latest project, the Sinenjabulo Zungu Sports Hub at St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls in Kloof, KwaZulu-Natal, is an exciting development. What inspired the creation of this sports centre, and what long-term impact do you hope it will have on young female athletes?

The creation of the Sinenjabulo Zungu Sports Hub was inspired by a personal commitment to community upliftment and youth development. It is designed to empower young female athletes by providing them with a supportive environment and the resources they need to grow. The goal is to create a space where girls feel confident to dream bigger in sport and in life, knowing they have the support and opportunities to excel.

With your demanding role in football leadership and your advocacy work across the continent, how do you manage to balance your professional responsibilities with your personal life while staying grounded and focused?

Balancing professional responsibilities with personal life requires prioritising what matters most. I rely on intentional discipline, strong personal values, and a reliable support system. Creating boundaries, such as dedicating quality time to family—especially with my son—helps me disconnect from work when necessary. Maintaining personal wellbeing is also important, as it keeps me grounded, focused, and able to lead effectively.

For young women across KwaZulu-Natal and beyond who aspire to lead in sport, business, or other traditionally male-dominated industries—what advice would you give them about stepping confidently into those spaces?

My advice to young women aspiring to lead in sport, business, or other traditionally male-dominated industries is to believe that they belong in those spaces. Work hard, continuously build your knowledge, and remain resilient in the face of challenges. Seek mentors, build strong networks, and stay authentic to who you are. Most importantly, use sport as a platform to make a positive difference. Be confident, stay resilient, and never limit your ambitions, because the sports industry is evolving and young women have the power to shape its future.

Through her leadership, advocacy, and unwavering determination, Sinenjabulo Zungu continues to embody the spirit of resilience and progress. Her journey serves as both inspiration and proof that when women lead with purpose, they do not simply occupy spaces—they transform them.

As the rallying cry of AmaZulu supporters echoes proudly, “Hebe Usuthu!”, so too does the celebration of a woman whose influence continues to uplift communities, inspire young women, and redefine leadership in sport.
