Team South Africa is gearing up for another shot at Olympic glory with the 2024 Paris Olympic games set to kick-off on Friday 26 July. This will be South Africa’s ninth consecutive appearance at the Olympics since readmission into international sport in 1991, and the 21st overall with the African powerhouse making appearances between 1904 and 1960, before being banished from the international arena due to Apartheid.
South Africa will send close to 150 athletes across 19 sporting codes to the Paris games with the hope of improving the medal count from the previous outing in Tokyo, where the team came back with only three medals, with gold and silver from swimmer Tatjana Smith (Schoenmaker) and a silver medal that was captured by Surfer Bianca Buitendag. The memories of Rio 2016 will not be too far away for the athletes as it represents the country’s best ever performance at the Olympics with 10 medals (2 gold, 6 silver and 2 bronze) in total, and they will hope to replicate or even better that number in Paris.
