KwaZulu-Natal MEC of Sports Arts and Culture Mntomuhle Khawula has announced the KZN government will incentivise top peforming KZN athletes at this years Comrades Marathon. The 98th edition of the “Ultimate Human Race” will take place on Sunday 8 June, a down run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. This will be the 49th down-run that will feature over 22,000 athletes from around the world.

This years race will be extra special for KZN runners with the provincial government tabling prize money for top performing athletes from the province. The top 3 KZN men and women will each receive an incentive, provided they finish inside the top 30 (men and women’s race). First place will receive R60 000, with second and third place getting R40 000 and R20 000 respectively.

“This coming weekend KwaZulu-Natal will host the iconic Comrades Marathon, the department is proud to support this globally renowned event which plays a significant role promoting Sports tourism and elevate the Province’s profile,” said MEC Khawula speaking at the KZN Legislature in a portfolio Committee meeting.

“To incentivise KwaZulu-Natal Athletes the department will reward the first, second and third-placed KZN men and women home with a cash prize. The first 3 males and female athletes from KZN to cross the finish line will each receive a cash incentive of R60 000 for first, R40 000 for second and R20 000 for third, provided they finish in the top 30.”
