Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy says as geopolitical pressures drive up household costs, government is advancing an integrated transport system designed to make public transport safer and more affordable.

October is recognised as Transport Month in South Africa, highlighting the importance of safe, efficient and accessible transport.

Creecy says her department is in the process of reforming the public transport grant system into a unified support model available on selected routes to bus and taxi operators alike.

Despite these efforts, criminality remains a persistent challenge in South Africa’s public transport sector and continues to hinder the sector’s growth and development.

The minister has added that they are also confronting criminality and intimidation in the sector.

“There are criminal elements operating in our public transport sector and we are very glad that this has been brought to light and we hope there will be swift prosecution so that we are able to develop and formalise the public transport sector without the interference of criminal elements,” said Creecy.

Public transport remains a key part of daily life in South Africa, with millions of commuters relying on taxis, buses and trains to get to work, school and other destinations.
