AfriForum has asked the Khampepe Commission for permission for its legal representative, Gerrie Nel, to cross-examine former South African President Thabo Mbeki.
This relates to allegations of political interference aimed at preventing the prosecution of people accused of committing criminal offences during the apartheid era.
These include the 1985 bombing near Musina, in which Kobie van Eck and his two young children were killed.
Mbeki is expected to appear before the commission today to testify over two days.
AfriForum Chief Executive Officer Kallie Kriel has accused the ANC of playing a role in the violation of human rights.
Kriel reiterated, “Afriforum wants answers from Mr Mbeki as to what role he played to stop himself and other ANC leaders from being prosecuted for decisions they made to make the plantation of landmines and bombs possible.”
The Khampepe Commission of Inquiry continues this Monday as the former president proceeds with his testimony.
So far, Mbeki had maintained a rather defensive stance, denying the allegations tabled against him and stating that they are a complete fabrication.
“We are involved to make sure that there is justice,” said Kriel.
