The African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula, has confirmed that discussions surrounding a potential government of national unity, along with the upcoming national budget, will feature prominently when the ANC’s national officials and the National Working Committee convene today.

This development comes as Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana prepares to table the national budget before Parliament for the third time on 21 May. The mid-year budget presentation is expected to provide updated projections and adjustments to the fiscal framework ahead of the general elections, scheduled for 29 May.

Speaking to the media following a by-election campaign in Freedom Park, Soweto, on Sunday, Mbalula stated that discussions around the budget will continue until it is formally presented to Parliament.

“The budget is a critical part of our national planning, especially in light of the upcoming elections and economic pressures facing the country,” Mbalula said.

The ANC has previously hinted at exploring broader political cooperation post-election should no single party secure a clear majority. The concept of a government of national unity, similar to the arrangement formed in 1994, has resurfaced in recent political discourse amid declining support for the ruling party in various polls.
