ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula says the party welcomes President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to place Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave, following serious allegations levelled against him by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Speaking on behalf of the ruling party, Mbalula said the president had acted well within his constitutional powers. He described the move as a “responsible act” that reinforces the principle of accountability in government.
“The African National Congress supports the President’s decision, which demonstrates a commitment to upholding the Constitution and maintaining the integrity of public institutions,” Mbalula stated.
Although details of the allegations have not been officially disclosed, the matter has raised significant public interest, particularly given the sensitivity surrounding police leadership and governance in the country. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is expected to probe the matter further.
Minister Mchunu, a senior figure in the ANC and former Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, will remain on special leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
