Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says bilateral relations between Canada and South Africa are poised to deepen through enhanced international cooperation and shared global priorities.
Carney met with President Cyril Ramaphosa ahead of the G7 Summit, which commenced yesterday in Apulia, Italy. The meeting underscored the importance of diplomatic engagement, as both nations are preparing to host major international gatherings in 2025. Canada will chair the G7, while South Africa is set to host the G20 Summit in November.
The Canadian prime minister lauded South Africa’s swift support during Canada’s devastating wildfires in 2023, which saw unprecedented levels of international assistance. He also noted the countries’ ongoing collaboration in areas such as trade, green energy, technology, and investment.
“Our partnership with South Africa continues to grow across key sectors. As we face global challenges from climate change to economic recovery, our cooperation is more important than ever,” Carney said.
Canada and South Africa enjoy longstanding diplomatic relations dating back to the early 20th century, with formal diplomatic ties established in 1939. More recently, both nations have worked together on issues such as climate policy, peacekeeping, and inclusive economic growth through platforms such as the United Nations and the Commonwealth.
The upcoming G20 Summit in South Africa is expected to focus on sustainable development, global health equity, and reform of global financial institutions. These priorities closely align with Canada’s international agenda.
