IFP President and CoGTA Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa is urging communities to exercise caution as concerns over El Niño intensify.
The climate phenomenon, characterised by unusually warm Pacific Ocean temperatures, can disrupt weather patterns worldwide.
Although expected to peak in December, its effects could extend into next year and beyond.
Farmers are already reporting crop damage caused by extreme heat, raising concerns about agricultural production and food security.
Speaking in UPhongolo north of KZN Hlabisa has urged communities to follow official weather updates and take precautionary measures to protect their livelihoods.
“We should ensure that during hot days, we do not expose ourselves to the sun unnecessarily. Children should not play in the sun becausue they are not aware and only the parents will know about the weather temperatures.”
“As of November until March next year, let us normalise wearing hats or using umbrellas when walking outside and wearing dooks to avoid intense sunburns,” said Hlabisa.
