Deputy Minister of Health Sbongiseni Dlomo says teenage pregnancy is still a major concern for his department and is becoming a national crisis.

Adolescent pregnancy is increasing at an alarming rate in the country, as 30% of teenage girls in South Africa fall pregnant and more than 65% of these are unplanned pregnancies.

On Christmas Day, 145 teenagers delivered babies at various government facilities across the country.

According to statistics, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo, recorded the highest number of teenage pregnancies, with girls between 10 and 19 years old.

Dlomo says the government has programmes lined up to educate and protect young girls.
