The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has written to the Chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Justice, Xola Nqola, requesting an urgent meeting with the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), Advocate Shamila Batohi, and the Minister of Justice, Mmamoloko Kubayi.
This call follows concerning public statements made by Advocate Batohi regarding the infiltration of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the growing influence of individuals with ulterior motives within and outside the institution. According to Batohi, these individuals are undermining the integrity and functioning of the NPA, posing a serious threat to the credibility of South Africa’s justice system.
EFF MP, Carl Niehaus, has stated that the implications of Batohi’s remarks cannot be overstated. He argues that the NPA, tasked with prosecuting serious crimes and ensuring accountability, cannot afford to be compromised by corruption or external interference.
Advocate Batohi’s comments have raised alarm within legal and political circles, as the NPA has long been seen as a critical pillar in upholding the rule of law in South Africa. Batohi, who took office in 2018, has previously spoken out about the challenges facing the NPA, including political interference and resource constraints. However, her recent remarks seem to suggest that the infiltration of the institution is not just a matter of external pressure, but that individuals within the NPA itself may be working against its mandate.
The EFF’s call for a meeting highlights the seriousness with which the party views the situation. The party is seeking immediate intervention and clarity on what steps the Ministry of Justice and the NDPP are taking to safeguard the NPA’s independence and its ability to perform its duties effectively.
