Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, says the South African government is closely monitoring the emergence of a new Covid-19 variant, named Nimbus, which has recently been reported in parts of Asia.

Addressing the media during a post-Cabinet briefing, Ntshavheni reassured the public that while the Nimbus variant has not yet been detected in South Africa, the Department of Health remains on high alert and continues to work with international health bodies to track its spread and assess its potential impact.

“We are taking a precautionary approach and our health systems are prepared to respond, should the need arise,” said Ntshavheni.

She urged South Africans not to panic, but to remain vigilant and continue adhering to basic health protocols, such as regular handwashing, good respiratory hygiene, and staying home when unwell.

While early reports suggest that the Nimbus variant may be more transmissible, scientific research is still ongoing to determine its severity and resistance to existing vaccines.

The minister confirmed that no changes to current health regulations or travel guidelines have been made at this stage but said the government is prepared to act swiftly should the situation evolve.

The public is encouraged to stay informed through official government channels and to avoid spreading misinformation related to the variant.
