The Kwazulu-Natal Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka has reported an increase in the number of learners sitting for the 2025 national senior certificate examinations this year compared to the previous year.

195 thousand 899 learners are registered to write their final matric exams from the 21st of this month.

This represents a 3% growth from last year’s 190 thousand 452 learners who sat for the exams.

Hlomuka says that from the candidates, 179 thousand 751 are full time while 16 thousand 148 are part time.

“This upward trend is a clear reflection of the department’s sustainable efforts to improve learner reflection, reduce dropout rates, expand access to quality education it also demonstrates the growing confidence of learners and parents in the public education system. We celebrate this growth as a positive indicator of progress in our collective mission to ensure that every child in Kwazulu-Natal has an opportunity to complete their schooling and transition successfully, to post-schooling education training or employment,” says Hlomuka.
