KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli says tackling illegal immigration requires a collective commitment from government, law enforcement agencies, civil society organisations and local communities.
Ntuli made the remarks while leading a round-table discussion on illegal immigration in Mayville, Durban, under the banner of Operation “Engangeni Ngesango Iyafohla”.
The engagement comes amid growing public concern over illegal immigration and increasing calls for stricter enforcement of immigration laws. Several anti-illegal immigration groups have announced a major march scheduled for 30 June, aimed at drawing attention to the issue.
The round-table discussion brought together stakeholders from various sectors to examine the challenges associated with illegal immigration and explore possible solutions. Presentations delivered during the engagement highlighted the need for amendments to the Immigration Act, while also calling for a review of the Border Management Act to strengthen the capacity of law enforcement agencies to effectively enforce immigration laws.
Participants raised concerns about border security, undocumented migrants, pressure on public services and the need for improved coordination between government departments responsible for immigration management.
Ntuli emphasised that addressing illegal immigration requires a balanced approach that upholds the rule of law while protecting human rights and maintaining social stability.
He said the provincial government remains committed to promoting social cohesion, managing immigration in accordance with the law, and ensuring the safety and security of all residents in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Premier also reiterated the importance of cooperation between communities and law enforcement authorities in identifying and addressing immigration-related challenges, while discouraging vigilantism and unlawful actions.
