President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Leonard Lekgetho as the acting SIU head, effective from the 1st of February.

Lekgetho’s appointment follows the vacant position of Advocate Andy Mothibi, who left for the position of new National Director of Public Prosecutions, leaving a vacancy at the Special Investigating Unit.
Currently Lekgetho is serving as the Chief Operations Officer of the SIU.

The Presidency says Lekgetho has more than 22 years of forensic investigations experience, including serving as a forensic investigator at the then Directorate of Special Operations, known as the Scorpions.

“The constitution of the Republic of South Africa, read with section 10 of the NPA Act, decided to appoint Advocate Jan Lekgoa Mothibi with effect from the 1st of February 2026 as the national director of public prosecutions.

“With the appointment of Advocate Mothibi as an NDPP leaving a vacancy at the Special Investigating Unit, the president has decided to appoint Mr Leonard Lekgetho as an acting head of the special, with effect from the 1st of February 2026 – this is in line with section 1 B of the Special Investigating Unit constitution,” said Vincent Magwenya.
