Non-profit organisation Lifeline, which supports victims of rape and gender-based violence, has urged affected learners to report the alleged sexual offences.
The organisation’s director, Sinikiwe Biyela, made the call during a protest outside Mbambangalo High School in Mkhambathini over allegations of sexual abuse against a teacher who is also a pastor.
The 41-year-old teacher is accused of sexually abusing more than 11 learners, impregnating some of them and forcing some to terminate their pregnancies.
Biyela says the organisation is aware that some learners who have reported the matter are allegedly receiving threats from the suspect.
She urges other affected learners to speak out and seek help.
“They tell us that I am not the only one, I know there are others too. So we urge them to come out and talk about their experiences because it is very disheartening that these children are being abused,” says Biyela.
