The ANC has won its Constitutional Court battle against the IEC over its candidate lists for the upcoming local government elections.
The court has overturned an earlier Electoral Court ruling that rejected the ANC’s application to have its candidate lists considered as submitted, following an alleged technical glitch.
This means the IEC will now have to include the names it had excluded from the party’s candidate lists.
An emotional ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula was seen shedding a tear in his thank you speech as he addressed the media following the ruling.
This marks a legal victory for the party ahead of the 4 November local government elections, and now puts them in a healthier contesting position.
While breaking down in tears, Mbalula said,”Let me begin with thanks because this was never the work of the office. I thank the president of the ANC for his leadership through a hard month and insisting at every turn that this movement takes a lawful route and no other.”
He continued,” I thank the national officials of the movement who carried this matter with patience.”
