Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson has announced that disciplinary action will be taken against senior government officials implicated in a massive R800 million tender fraud involving the construction of an oxygen plant.

This comes after a forensic investigation by auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) uncovered a trail of fake documentation and serious irregularities in the procurement process. The tender, meant to facilitate the construction of a critical healthcare infrastructure project, is now under intense scrutiny.

Minister Macpherson said the investigation points to gross misconduct and corruption at high levels and emphasised that there will be “zero tolerance” for those who abused their positions of power.

Notably, the Chief Executive Officer of the Independent Development Trust (IDT), Tebogo Malaka, is facing possible suspension in light of her alleged involvement in the scandal. Macpherson said that her future at the organisation is under consideration pending further internal processes, stressing that “accountability is non-negotiable.”

“This is not just about recovering stolen money; it’s about restoring public confidence in our institutions,” said Macpherson. “Those who fail the people of South Africa will be held to account.”

The IDT, which operates under the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, is responsible for implementing social infrastructure projects across the country. It has previously come under fire for governance failures and lack of transparency.
