Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says municipalities across the country owe Eskom R63.2 billion.

The top 20 defaulting municipalities alone are R48.9 billion in debt.

The current year-to-date growth in debt stands at 4.7-billion-rand.

A total of 44 municipalities have been identified by Eskom and the government as having low electricity distribution competence.

Ramokgopa says 27 active payment plans are in place and by late last month, eleven municipalities were honouring the agreement and six had partially done so.
