Northwest businessman Brown Mogotsi has been found in contempt after failing to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is probing allegations of political interference in the criminal justice system.
Mogotsi, who is now representing himself, cited illness as the reason for his non-attendance and undertook to submit a medical certificate to support his claim.
Commission chairperson Mbuyiseli Madlanga ruled that Mogotsi will remain in contempt until satisfactory proof of his medical condition is provided. He indicated that a final decision on the matter will be made on Wednesday, ahead of the scheduled testimony of organised crime head Richard Shiburi.
The commission, established to probe claims of undue political influence over prosecutorial and investigative processes, has the authority to summon witnesses and compel testimony. A finding of contempt can result in a fine or imprisonment, depending on the seriousness of the non-compliance and whether the individual subsequently complies with the commission’s directives.
Proceedings are expected to continue this week, with further evidence anticipated from senior law enforcement officials.
