Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has defended the Government of National Unity (GNU), saying it is delivering jobs, economic stability and lower inflation.
McKenzie was speaking during the national commemoration of Reconciliation Day held in Nquthu, northern KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday.
He emphasised that the GNU remains united and committed to working together to stabilise the country’s economy and improve service delivery. McKenzie added that the coalition government would ensure President Cyril Ramaphosa completes his term in office until 2029.
The Government of National Unity was formed following the 2024 general elections, which resulted in no single party securing an outright majority in Parliament. Several political parties subsequently agreed to share power in an effort to promote stability and cooperation.
Reconciliation Day, observed annually on 16 December, commemorates South Africa’s journey towards unity and healing after decades of apartheid. The event in Nquthu brought together government leaders, traditional authorities and community members to reflect on social cohesion, nation-building and economic inclusion.
McKenzie said the spirit of reconciliation must be matched by tangible progress, including job creation, support for the arts and cultural sectors, and economic growth that benefits all South Africans.
