Police union, POPCRU, has called for stricter action to be taken against motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol or driving recklessly.
This follows the death of a traffic officer who was allegedly knocked down by a bakkie driver who failed to stop when the officer attempted to pull him over in Rustenburg, North West.
The driver reportedly fled the scene after the incident. POPCRU spokesperson Johannes Dire confirmed the casualty saying, ” The province has lost an experienced officer who’s contribution to serving the lives of our people will be solely missed.”
He added, “POPCRU maintains that traffic officers can not continue to be treated as expandable frontline workers, their lives matter and their safety must be prioritised.”

Dire also confirmed that the suspect was eventually arrested and was found to have been driving under the influence of alcohol.
He has called on law enforcement authorities to urgently strengthen road safety enforcement, particularly as the busy festive season approaches.
