The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union says the poor relationship between the country’s police and communities is a major contributor to the high rate of crime.

These sentiments were shared by POPCRU president Thulani Ngwenya at the inaugural Police Summit currently underway in Johannesburg.

The three-day event is attended by key stakeholders in the criminal justice sector, including labour, under the theme, “Efficiency in Action, Optimising South Africa’s Policing Potential.”

Ngwenya has called for more to be done to boost community trust in the police, saying this would go a long way in crime-fighting initiatives.
