The Teachers’ Union, Sadtu, has stated that independent educational institutions must remain accountable to the state, learners, and parents.

This follows a rape incident involving a seven-year-old Grade 1 learner at Bergville College in Matatiele, Eastern Cape.

The incident allegedly took place in October last year, and to date, the perpetrators have not been arrested, while the child has been suspended from the school.

Sadtu’s spokesperson, Nomusa Cembi, stated that the employment of teachers and staff at private institutions should align with the policies of public schools, including mandatory vetting against the National Register of Sex Offenders.
