Deputy Police minister Polly Boshielo says members will be deployed across several provinces to prevent politically motivated killings ahead of next month’s local government elections.

This follows a shooting in Katlehong, Gauteng, in which four ANC Youth League members were killed and three wounded.

Another shooting has been reported in Greytown in the midlands.

The victims in Gauteng were attending a memorial service for slain local ANC leader Jeanette Magugu.

Boshielo has urged political leaders to resolve differences through dialogue and not violence.

“We have escalated these cases to the PKTT of Gauteng to assist. Yesterday we were discussing as SAPS that we are going to provinces to check the readiness of our police in terms of the local government elections,”says Boshielo.

SAPS has reported multiple murders suspected to be politically motivated building up to the upcoming elections.

In KwaZulu Natal, Khethelo Mdluli, an IFP councillor candidate was assasinated at his home in oPhindweni, Gingindlovu (under the uMlalazi Local Municipality).

This served as one of the province’s latest recorded politically motivated murders building up to the elections.
