The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) says it is intensifying efforts to tackle fraud and misconduct within its ranks, with 65 officials dismissed following disciplinary proceedings since April 2025.

Chief Executive Officer Themba Matlou says the agency says it is strengthening its internal controls, closing loopholes and improving its ability to detect, investigate and address wrongdoing to protect the integrity of the social grant system.

SASSA received 134 cases involving alleged misconduct and fraud by its officials during this period. Of these, 106 have been finalised, while 28 remain pending.

He says disciplinary outcomes included dismissals, written warnings, final written warnings and suspensions without pay.

Some officials also resigned while disciplinary proceedings were under way. Sixteen cases were withdrawn, while four officials were found not guilty.

KwaZulu-Natal recorded 11 dismissals, while the Eastern Cape recorded the highest number, at 19. Gauteng and Mpumalanga each recorded 13 dismissals.

SASSA spokesperson Andile Tshon says the agency will continue pursuing allegations of wrongdoing.
