The head of Gift of the Givers’ Search and Rescue Unit, Ahmed Bham, says search and recovery operations are being ramped up in the Eastern Cape following devastating floods that have claimed the lives of at least 90 people. Among the victims is a ten-year-old girl from Libode.

To date, 83 bodies have been positively identified, with 56 of those remains released to their families for burial. Five bodies are still unidentified, as authorities continue the process of verification through forensic and DNA testing.

Bham confirmed that a multidisciplinary team including members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Air Wing and the canine unit, is actively combing areas surrounding the Mthatha Dam and nearby rivers. The team is focused on locating those who are still missing and providing closure for affected families.

The torrential rains, which began earlier this month, triggered widespread flooding in several parts of the OR Tambo District Municipality. Roads and bridges have been damaged, homes destroyed, and access to clean water and electricity severely disrupted in some communities.

Gift of the Givers, along with provincial emergency services and community volunteers, has been providing humanitarian aid, including food parcels, blankets, and clean drinking water to displaced residents.

The South African Weather Service has warned of continued adverse weather conditions in parts of the province, urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid crossing swollen rivers or flooded areas.

Government officials have committed to supporting recovery and rebuilding efforts, but many residents say more urgent intervention is needed.
