Suspended deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya is no longer a police officer effective today.
He faced disciplinary proceedings over serious allegations of corruption, abuse of power and links to the criminal underworld.
He has been accused of ordering the removal of 121 case dockets from the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team following Matlala’s arrest.
Sibiya was suspended from his position as SAPS Deputy National Commissioner in September 2025 following the revelation of these allegations.
Acting national police commissioner Puleng Dimpane says Sibiya’s departure has been classified as a dishonorable discharge because he resigned while facing a disciplinary case.
“His disciplinary proceedings were held this morning and at that particular point his lawyers tendered his resignation with immediate effect, so the disciplinary processes came to and end because he is no longer our member as a result of his resignation,” said Dimpane.
The 59-year-old senior cop is also facing charges of sexually grooming a 16-year-old girl between July and August 2026, as well as the alleged rape of an 18-year-old woman.
He made his first appearance on the 22nd of September, and the state has since postponed his bail hearing twice meaning the former SAPS top cop still remains behind bars.
Nonetheless, Sibiya’s resignation will not immunise him from facing courts on all criminal cases he has been implicated on, both on his capacity as a SAPS official and on a personal level.
