Suspended Deputy National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Lieutenent General Shadrack Sibiya has seen his bail hearing postponed to Thursday, the 1st of October.
On Tuesday, Sibiya made his second appearance at the Randburg Magistrate’s court where he faces five charges including rape, sexual grooming and trafficking in persons.
The 59-year-old senior cop is accused of sexually grooming a 16-year-old girl between July and August 2026, as well as the alleged rape of an 18-year-old woman.
The story on Sibiya’s charges broke out following detainment on Monday after he was apprehended at a strip club in Johannesburg.
He made his first appearance on the 22nd of September, where the court postponed his bail hearing as the state had opposed it, citing concerns about witness interference and the risk of escape.
Lt Gen Sibiya faces these charges while being out of his job for nearly a year since he was suspended from his position as Deputy National Commissioner in September 2025.
The SAPS top officer was suspended over allegations of being involved in serious misconduct involving the KwaZulu Natal Political Killings Task Team (PKTT). Sibiya was accused of ordering the withdrawal of 121 case dockets from the task team and moving them to the Detective and Forensic Services division without the National Commissioner’s authorisation.
On Tuesday, Sibiya made his second court appearance following the first postponement on the 22nd.
Nonetheless, the Randburg Magistrate’s court has granted the state another postponement after making a request, after the defence had brought forward another witness in the case.
The state argues that it needs to be granted more time to prepare as it had only been served with papers of a new witness on the day of the hearing.
