Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee member Sibonelo Nomvalo confronted former Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) head Robert McBride over claims that former police minister Nathi Nhleko hired an illegal immigrant as his chief of staff.

Nomvalo accused McBride of making unfounded and potentially harmful allegations against Zimbabwean national Leon Mbangwa, saying the matter had already been settled in court after evidence confirmed Mbangwa’s citizenship.

The committee is continuing its hearings into alleged political interference in the justice system. Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police chief Julius Mkhwanazi is expected to appear before the committee to answer questions about his alleged relationship and favours involving Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala.

McBride has maintained that his claims were based on information available to him at the time.

“At that Zondo Commission, former Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko did not deny it but said it’s in the process of being regulated and being resolved.

“My audacity is based on fact, and the fact is that at that time that he was appointed, he was still holding and using a false passport, and that is on his CV,” said McBride.
