The Quality assurance body Umalusi, has introduced strict new rules for online and distance learning providers offering the National Senior Certificate.
The council says that these non-negotiable requirements were developed with the Department of Basic Education, the Independent Examinations Board, and the South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute to ensure credibility and fairness of assessments.
Umalusi CEO Mafu Rakometsi has told the media that online providers must adhere to the national curriculum and in-person writing of final examinations.
“There is currently no regulatory framework for online education. We have also communicated that The Department of Basic Education has been working on interim measures for the purpose of regulating online schools. Regrettably not much progress has been made in this regard,” says Ramoketsi.
