The State in the inquest into Albert Luthuli’s death has told the Pietermaritzburg High Court that it has located the family of the boy who allegedly witnessed the incident which possibly led to a tragic death.
Luthuli died in 1967, after allegedly being struck by a goods train in Groutville.
The state says that it has located the boy’s elder sister, who is now 84 years old.
The boy, who has been identified as Mbhemu Myandu disappeared shortly after the incident in 1967.
Reading out the sworn affidavit, here is what Advocate Humphrey Ngcobo who spoke with the sister has said.
“On 4 August 2025 Mdletshe took me to the house and introduced me to Coecilia Nxele, upon arrival in the house she was ill in bed, she had been ill for some time. She is 84 years old. She informed me that in 1967 she was most of the day at a shop in Mlazi with her father and only slept at home. The name of the boy who disappeared is Mbhemu Myandu,” read Ngcobo.
