The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it has received confirmation from the South African Police Service (SAPS) that its criminal charges against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu are now under active investigation.
Minister Mchunu was recently placed on special leave by President Cyril Ramaphosa amid serious allegations of corruption and political interference, raised by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
DA MP Baxolile Nodada welcomed the development, stating that Minister Mchunu, like all South Africans, is not above the law.
“Where laws are broken, criminal investigations must follow—regardless of the political standing of those involved,” said Nodada.
“This process must unfold without fear or favour, in line with the principles of accountability and justice.”
The DA laid the charges earlier this month, citing concerns over alleged undue influence in police appointments and procurement processes. The party has called for a swift and transparent investigation by the relevant authorities.
