DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis says Parliament’s impeachment committee must pursue the truth without fear or favour as it begins its work.
The committee is meeting for the first time today to elect a chairperson and determine its programme going forward.
Speaking to the public broadcaster, Hill-Lewis said the process is about protecting the principles of accountability, ethics and honesty in government, rather than targeting any individual or administration.
“The mandate is to uphold ethics and honesty. This is not about this government; it’s about something much bigger than this government. It’s about the kind of future that we want for our country. If we want a better future, we have to stand up for some values,” said Hill-Lewis.
He emphasised that the committee’s work must be conducted independently and transparently, adding that public confidence in democratic institutions depends on leaders being held accountable when questions of conduct arise.
Meanwhile, EFF leader Julius Malema has argued that the impeachment committee should not be chaired by a member of the Government of National Unity (GNU), saying this would help ensure a fair and transparent process.
Malema said an independent chairperson would strengthen public trust in the committee’s work and reduce the risk of political influence or perceived bias.
The composition and leadership of the committee are expected to be closely scrutinised as lawmakers begin deliberations. Political parties have stressed the importance of ensuring that the process remains credible, impartial and focused on upholding constitutional principles.
