The Electricity and Energy deputy minister, Samantha Graham-Maré, has urged owners of large public and private buildings to urgently register for energy performance certificates by 7 December this year.
The certificates indicate a building’s energy efficiency and help reduce costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
Since 2020, nearly eight-thousand buildings have been registered, with Gauteng leading and Northern Cape the lowest.
Graham-Maré warns that the deadline will not be extended, and non-compliance will not be tolerated:
“It is concerning that some provinces are sowing very few new registrations. I want to remind all South African of the numerous benefits that come from adopting and implementing energy saving methods. We should take this opportunity to reduce carbon emissions while also saving money in the process,” says Graham-Maré.
